XFL A History T-Minus 15 minutes to the best 30 for 30 on record
For people that are just as excited as I am for the 30 for 30 out this week, I wanted to give a brief history of what the XFL was and the amazing stuff it brought to us. I’m really think that if something like this came along now with the dip in NFL play it would have made it. If you think about it this happened almost 20 years ago which is nuts but the league trying to compete with the already established NFL it just couldn’t gain traction and ultimately only played one season.
Setting Up The League
The idea was brought to light in a 50-50 split between NBC and Vince McMahon. Because he was actually approached by the Toronto Argonauts to buy their team he had the idea of forming the league. His idea was to start this league and the purchase the CFL and fold the teams all into the XFL. At the time with wrestling so big Vince thought it was a good idea to mix professional football with a little bit of the fun side of WWF. Yeah the real name. They decided to put football teams in all the major media markets and get three games a week on NBC, UPN, and TNN. Here are the eight teams they went with.
With all this set up the first and only draft was happened October 28, 2000 to October 30, 2000 with a supplemental draft in December.
Changes to The Game
Everyone who knows anything about the XFL will always talk about the coin toss or human coin toss. What they would do is line up on the 30 yrd line , the ref would blow the whistle and they would sprint to the ball on the 50. Whoever got the ball won the toss and would get his choice what his team would do. Yeah Yeah here is the video of it.
Also famously in the first one they ever did one of the guys separated his shoulder and was out for the season. What I love about this video is it looks like it’s from 1970. I don’t feel like I’m that old but damn seeing video from the year 2001 and it looks that shitty makes me wonder how we ever watched TV back in the day.
They didn’t believe in extra points in the XFL because they saw it as a pussy guaranteed points. They had to go for it after every touchdown from the two yard line. During the regular season they were all for one point but during the playoffs there were actually 2 and 3 point plays.
In a brilliant but not really the best way of doing it their Overtime was modeled after college with some big differences. Teams would start at the 20 yard line, you couldn’t kick a field goal until 4th down and no first downs. BIG differences were if the team with the ball at the opening scored a touchdown in two plays the opposing team would only have two downs to tie it up.
Another crazy think in the league was there was no fair catches. In a punt the guys catching the ball would get smoked almost every play. Wild move for a league but an awesome one for someone that is watching it. And to combat anybody being squeamish they made it a 10 yard penalty to coffin corner a punt. They just wanted guys getting killed.
And the last fun rule change is their was forward motion on offense. It’s a rule that is fun to watch just like the arena league but I don’t think works all that good.
This 30 for 30 I have been pumped for ever since I knew it was coming out. So we can all sit back and enjoy the destruction of something 20 years later we all wish was still around.
