Tiger Woods teed off today for the first time in almost two years. It’s great for the sport of golf to have its number one star back. The world was watching, and Tiger put on a show delivering a below average +1 round. Torrey Pines is a course that Woods has dominated his entire career. His last win there came in 2013, which was also his last win on tour. Woods’ back looked like it was 100% on Thursday. Injuries have nagged Tiger of late and he hasn’t been competitive in years. Tiger, equipped with his new Taylormade equipment struggled to find the fairway on his drives. With Nike folding out of the golf club game, I was hoping the new sticks would bring back visions of the old Tiger. Unfortunately, Tigers struggles off the tee continued, with him hitting only 4 of 14 fairways. His driving distance was greatly shorter than his last appearance at Torrey Pines. Look for Woods to make adjustments tomorrow and have a strong outing. I think he will hit many more fairways and sink some critical putts. Realistically, Tiger isn’t going to win this tournament, but I fully expect him to be under par the rest of the weekend.
