Start out your day with a little Lance Armstrong news
Lance getting smoked by a judge today in the tune of trail. If you don’t remember the US government is still going after Mr. Armstrong to the tune of $100 mil. Turns out if you get caught doing PED’s or doping or you admit it while being sponsored by the US government they aren’t going to take that too kindly. I’m sure like most of us out there we thought all this crap was over. Too me it’s just not about the doping because really who cares about that everyone was doing that, It’s how he basically destroyed the careers of all of his teammates that wouldn’t partake what they needed to do to win.
Former teammate Scott Mercier
“I have to recognize that Lance is 80% gray, 10% white and 10% black,” says Mercier.
“I think there are three camps in the U.S.: those that absolutely hate him and will never forgive him, those that overlook everything that he did and those that are a bit indifferent.
So how this lawsuit works is that the government is allowed to go after more then triple of what they paid him during his cycling career. They claim to have given the cyclist $17 mil and spent over $33 mil in monies for the overall sponsorship. Here is a quote from the judge:
“Giving Armstrong `credit’ for the benefits he delivered while using (performance-enhancing drugs) could be viewed as an unjust reward for having successfully concealed his doping for so long,” U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper wrote in his ruling. “(But) disregarding any benefits USPS received from the sponsorship could bestow the government with an undeserved windfall. The same could be said of Landis, whose role in this entire affair some would view as less than pure.”
If he hasn’t been rung dry yet this will be the last straw I’m guessing. I have heard podcasts of this guy since then and he seems like an alright guy. This would have just been a non story if he wasn’t an asshole back in the day. Every one in cycling does something to help that is illegal. The tour de france is a 21 day race that is 2,200 miles. That is a bonkers race that in america is meaningless.
