Recap of Jake Arrieta striking out 10 as the Chicago Cubs take 2-3 from the Brewers
The Jake Arrieta train is already rolling after a 7-4 win Sunday at Miller Park. It’s nice to see it so early but he is getting a lot of strikeouts getting into his grove. I’m looking for a big bounceback year for him to get by into Cy Young shape. Jake was still top 10 best pitchers in baseball but had a down year compared to his Cy Young dominating 2015. This was this 100th time that Jake put on the Chicago Cubs uniform striking out 10 batters in seven innings for his 13th double-digit strikeout game. Arrieta kept his streak alive with his ninth straight win in the month of April. Joe Maddon obviously threw some praise his way for only averaging about 91-92 mph on his ball.
“I love it, actually,” Maddon said. “His delivery and location and pitchability was outstanding. I’d much rather see what we saw today than 94, 95 [mph] all over the map, absolutely.”
If Jake has a drop in velocity but keeps the command that he is showing now everyone should be fine with it. It might be a little hot button discussion but the Cubs just aren’t worried about it with the outs he is getting.
Jake Arrieta really only got into trouble two times this game giving up three runs in the third inning. Ryan Braun of the Brewers seems just to be a guy that has Jake’s number. This was his third home run that he has hit off the Cubs starter. That is a career 7-21 Ryan Braun has batted against Arrieta. That brought the game to at least striking distance at the time with the Cubs still winning 5-3.
The Chicago Cubs were red hot straight out of the gate scoring four runs in the first inning. We finally have some offensive production out of Kris Bryant who went 3/4 so we can put to rest the is he done chat. Now the Cubs just need Rizzo to find his way into some hits.
The whole lineup is already vintage 2016 Cubs. Zobrist is hitting for power smoking a home run in the seventh and Kyle Schwarber batting leadoff got his second home run in the second inning.
But what every Chicago Cubs fan should be jumping up and down happy for is Jason Heyward’s offensive production so far in this short year. He is hitting .333 so far and got two more hits in this game with three RBIs. With his continued success, the division title is already ours. But the Cubs put this one away 7-4. Next game is the home opener against the Dodgers 7:05 start time
