A painful to watch 2nd half ends with North Carolina getting the title
North Carolina taking it home
Let me just start out with saying if I wasn’t a Carolina fan no way would I have sat thru the second half of that game. The amount of dead time was getting uncomfortable with the fouls the refs were calling. They also made some really dumb calls too. How they called a flagrant on Joel Berry at the end was something that I’ll never understand. Especially when a huge white man nearly ripped his head clean off.

The game will be remembered as a huge win for North Carolina but I’m going to remember it as a game the refs dominated in the second half. Both teams were in the bonus with 13 minutes left. The real surprise for me was that none of the Carolina guards fouled out in this time but Gonzaga sure was in trouble. Other than Collins fouling out early the whole Gonzaga team looked to be in foul trouble.
North Carolina shot terrible in the first half which made this game way closer than it should have been. They missed 11 of their first 13 three-point attempts. That has been UNC all year in a nutshell. They come out trying to should themselves to a win when they have dominating bigs that they could feed down below. A number of bad look shots that they were taking had me yelling at my TV. I don’t know the stat but seemed like they took the majority of their three-point attempts with at least 20 seconds on the shot clock. They looked like they didn’t know what they were doing just chucking up threes.
Gonzaga on the other hand, did the only thing they could to keep themselves in this game and that was actually hit threes. In the first half, they went 5-9 which gave them an early lead. If they didn’t get this lead the game would have been much different. Carolina wouldn’t have been chucking up threes.
In the second half with the refs seemingly getting paid per foul, this game stayed close because no one could get into a rhythm. Carolina kept throwing up bad three attempts but hitting at least a few in the second half. Joel Berry took over which is what UNC needed to win this game. He was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, in the title game, he scored 22 with six assists. My man Kennedy Meeks with the biggest play of the game with a late block what was the end of the Zags.

After losing in the last seconds last year this game really felt like redemption. My butt got a little tight in the closing seconds when Nigel Williams – Goss was driving but then Meeks blocked his shot making me scream like a little girl. There really is nothing in this world like your team winning a championship. As a man, I don’t think anything does maybe a kid being born but come on the Cubs winning the series last year was really close to that.
The final for the game was 71-65 which will win Roy his third championship.
