NBA White Guy The Stormin’ Mormon Shawn Bradley
The only white guy I think I’ve ever felt bad for in the NBA. Shawn Bradley was the first man in the history of the NBA that was drafted for just being tall at 7’6″. I’m almost positive that the 7-foot tall man written by Adam Sandler was 100% written by this guy. Not sure if people remember it but here ya go.
Shawn was actually born in Germany but he grew up in Utah, Which gave him one of my favorite nicknames ever The Stormin’ Mormon. He is I’m guessing the best basketball player in the history of Utah high school averaging 20.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.4 blocked shots. Now I want you to really look at those numbers. Being the tallest person ever in Utah you would expect him to have way more rebounds. I’m sure that is a testament to his amazing athletic ability. He won two state championships at Emery High school as well as three all-star game appearances. He also played in the McDonald’s All-American game where he put up 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks. For his career, he actually holds a decent record for blocked shots in his career with 506.
Obviously being heavily recruited and being from Utah he went to BYU. During the 90-91 season, he got 177 blocks in the 34 game season and averaged 15 pts a game. He was the freshman and also on the WAC all-defensive team. Ultimately after one year, he took his fun Mormon missionary service and when he was done instead of going back to school he entered the NBA draft. Now he didn’t play basketball for 2 years and entered the draft. Showing how crazy NBA teams are he was picked #2 in the 1993 draft only behind Chris Webber at #1.
What I think will surprise people is he actually played 14 years in the NBA, retiring after the 05 season. I think that I’m mostly going to remember him from space jam.
Dammit I love 90’s basketball. Here are some of his highlights.
