NBA white guy of the day Wally Szczerbiak
Wally was part of some really good Timberwolves team in the early 2000’s with Kevin Garnet. That’s how I really came to know this try hard forward. He played for 10 years in the NBA
This might not be an absolutely true NBA white guy because he was born in Spain but one non the less. His dad was actually a stud at basket, playing for Real Madrid. He lead them to 3 European league championships and actually scored 65 points in one game.
Wally went to a small high school and really wasn’t recruited at all. Growing up in Long Island as a senior he averaged 36 and 15 a game. He also won the Nassau County outstanding player of the year. Wally also competed with the Long Island team for the Empire State Games in 94. The games is an olympic style event for amateur athletes in the state of New York.
When he was a senior in high school he went and visited the Miami University campus. The one in Ohio and committed very soon after to coach Herb Sendek. In his first two seasons he was averaging 8 and 12 nothing really special. Then his junior year he finally figured it out averaging 24 a game. That year he earned first team ALL-MAC honors even missing a bunch of games with a broken wrist.
His Senior year he brought the Redbirds to the sweet 16 averaging 24 a game again. They were a #10 seed in the Tourney. The first round that year he killed Washington with a 43 pt shellacking. Miami eventually lost to Kentucky in the 3rd round.
Wally was MAC player of the yyear and a first team all american. He finished his college career being second all time in scoring.
Szczerbiak was drafted 6th overall in the 1999 draft. That one had Elton Brand go #1 overall with Stevie Franchise going #2. Wally was drafted over Pip Hamilton, Shawn Marion, Jason Terry, and Ron Artest.
Here are some highlights terrible music.
