NBA white guy of the day Rick Berry
This my friends is the God Father of the potty shot. If you don’t know what that is
I really think that even today that is a magical shot. If you were wondering at the time he held the greatest freethrow percentage in the history of the NBA .900. Now he is ranked 7th after some of these insane shooters got into the NBA like Ray Allen.
Besides his amazing free throws he is actually considered one of the 50 greatest players to ever put on a jersey. He is the only player to lead the league in scoring in NCAA, ABA, and NBA which is a ridiculous thing to accomplish. Rick also had two sons who played in the NBA Brent and Jon.
Graduating from Roselle Park High School in 1962 and went to the U. At Miami he averaged 37 pts a game his senior year. That has to be some sort of record for a big time college. They would have 100% at least contended for the title but the school was on probation ( nothing changes ). Barry is only 2 players to have his number retired at the U, the other being just some dude.
He was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors in 65 draft 2nd overall. A couple ahead of Jerry Sloan. In his second year he was chosen to play on the All star team. This was back when this game actually mattered to players, Rick put a clinic for 38pts on guys like Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, and Bill Russell. Maybe my second favorite white guy nick name only behind White Chocolate, the Miami Greyhound got rookie of the year in 65. He averaged 25 and 10. Reaching the NBA finals in 66 he averaged 40 pts per game.
He played on a bunch of teams in his career spanning from ABA teams like Virginia Squires and at the time the New York Nets. That’s enough white guy, here are some highlights:
