NBA white guy of the day Jon Koncak
If you aren’t deep into 90’s basketball you might not know this guy. Jon might have been the first white guy to be drafted because he is tall. He def didn’t have a great NBA career but he hung in there for a long time just for being tall.
Jon started his career out playing for Southern Methodist University. While playing for the Mustangs he compiled a 67-29 record from 81 – 85. He brought lead the team in scoring while he brought them to the tournament two years in a row in 84 and 85. In the 84-85 season they spent the entire year in the top 25, being as high as 2. Jon also won a gold metal being on the Olympic team in 84. Koncak holds SMU career rankings of first in rebounds (1169), first in blocks (278), third in scoring (1784 points), and second in field-goal percentage (.559). He got his number retired in 08.
Koncak was drafted by the Hawks in 85 with the 5th pick. He was drafted before Chris Mullin, Charles Oakley, and Karl Malone. Jon spent 10 years coming off the bench for the Hawks before he was signed by Orlando when he closed out his career.
Alright that is not really why he is well known to me. What popped in my mind when I thought of him was this guy started the NBA ridiculous contract. This guy at the time made more money than Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird. Let me remind you he was a bench player. The contract was a 6 year $13 mil a year. This also helped give this guy the name Jon Contract.
There are really no highlights for this guy so here is him looking silly. Ultimate NBA white guy.
