Now that Georges St-Pierre is out of the way we will get to see what we all wanted Michael Bisping vs Yoel Romero anyway
With Georges St-Pierre not being ready to fight until October, Yoel Romero will get his shot at Michael Bisping come July according to Dana White
DANA White has dropped a UFC bombshell, declaring Georges St-Pierre’s comeback title fight against Michael Bisping is dead.
With GSP saying he would not fight until “after October”, the stacked middleweight division had been put into gridlock and top contenders were taking angry potshots at the UFC.
White has now seemingly taken the extraordinary of killing the GSP vs Bisping match – planned as a blockbuster comeback for the Canadian icon after more than three years out of the Octagon, and a deserved big payday for the English journeyman.
White said Bisping would now fight No.1 contender Yoel Romero, as was originally planned.
“I made this GSP fight, we did a press conference. The thing was supposed to happen in July. Michael Bisping is going to have to defend his title now. We’re not waiting for GSP,” White told FOX Sports
The casual fans of MMA are usually nostalgic to want to see St-Pierre again fight in the UFC. They might have a little bias with him being their favorite fighter seeing him mop up the division and think that his skills will still translate into today’s MMA. No doubt he will still be a force to reckon with because his drive and wrestling made him a great fighter. Some might say he was the start of the prototypical MMA fighter today. My question about his comeback is how the UFC is handling it. If people forget his last couple of fights, he got wrecked.
And I believe that he got beat up by lesser competition than anything that he will meet today. The UFC is just handling this all wrong putting him in front of the middleweight champion without any fights before this main event. Michael Bisping is firing on all cylinders right now and in my opinion would turn out ugly with GSP fighting a bigger guy.
For that reason, I can’t help but want to see Bisping fight a MUCH MUCH more deserving guy in Yoel Romero. The UFC won’t get as big of a draw during this battle, but it’s hard to argue against the #1 contender. The last five fights that Romero has fought in have been against great ones. Brad Tavares, Tim Kennedy, Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo Souza, and Chris Weidman have all met defeat against Yoel Romero. The resume’ is impressive compared to GSP not fighting for years.
The change all sparks from a Twitter video GSP put out.
