Midweek Brewsky: Citrusy Wit by Stone Brewing
I know, I know…
It’s not the “middle of the week” anymore. Technically we’re closer to the weekend than Madonna is to reality but, I had to share this new beer I had with you. Normally, I tend to stay away from Stone, seeing as how most of the beers they make are just for shock value and full frontal assault on your pallet with overwhelming flavors or hoppiness. Don’t get me wrong, they put out a bunch of good beers, it’s just that most of their beers are what they do best, destroying your sense of taste for the next three hours. BUT HEY! If you’re into that then, by God, full speed to you good sir. Taste is subjective…. I digress…
It’s a wit-bier, which literally mean “wheat beer”, so it is light on the malty flavor and sweetness. The beer is nice and light, sitting at 35 IBUs, it’s really really easy to drink. It makes for a great segway into craft beers, if you’re not already into them. The hops that they use in this beer (Mandarina Bavaria) are very sutle and normally are just used for aroma. In this beer, Stone really pulls it off on this one. Not only does it smell amazing, but it really does live up to it’s name. It’s citrusy as fuck. Now, I’m not talking drinking a bottle of “Citrus Pine-Sol” citrusy, or even a Lemon Shandy (the brewery of which I’m not mentioning the name of because the drinkers of those beers were discussed in the last article).
No, it’s citrusy in a way that compliments the beer you have in your hand. It’s brewed with tangerines, kaffir lime, and coriander.
Although, it’s not a hefty beer coming in at only 5.3% ABV, it does make for a good all year round beer. Nothing about this beer is really singular to any season. The tangerine and citrus make it feel like a spring/ summer beer. The coriander and hops give it a bit of a spicy undertone for the fall/ winter.
Drink-ability is off the charts. Go ahead. Just do it. Chug that shit.
It’s light, delicious, and probably one of the only beers I wouldn’t mind bringing to party and drink on all night. The only thing holding this beer back, is the $12 price tag. All in all, I give this beer 8/10. Cheers!
