Get primed for the Daytona 500 with some Days of Thunder
Crazy to think this movie came out in 1990. This is the all time racing movie. I wish that they made more of these because I would be first in line for a new movie about actual Nascar racing.
In case you were wondering all the cars in this movie were provided by Hendrick Motorsports. They actually had some actual guys driving too. Greg Sacks, Tommy Ellis, Bobby Hamilton, and Hut Stricklin drove cars in the movie. I forgot about Hut Stricklin. My dad was a huge Winston Cup fan, when the name was actually cool. Today I believe it’s sponsored by Monster, which sounds cool too.
The movie actually was loosely based off a guy named Tim Richmond. They used several scenes from real life stories in the movie. The scene where he gets in a fight with the crew chief because he was eating ice cream in the pit actually happened. It was in 87 at the Southern 500 between Tim and chief Harry Hyde. Also replacement driver Benny ‘can tell you everything wrong with a car just by looking at it’ Parsons. Loved when this guy was announcing. He was a classic. It always amazed me how he could just spot what was wrong with a car every time.
