Feb. 14 pitchers and catchers report Get to Know Mike Montgomery
This 27 year old will be our 5th starter for the majority of the year if I had to guess. This Man should be a legend to all of us Cubs fans. He is the magical arm that was pitching for the glorious final out of the World Series last year. So if you don’t know too much about him here is his back round.
He was the 36th pick in the first round for the royals in 2008 out of William S. Hart High School in Santa Clarita, California. Mike carried a 5-12 record between AA and AAA before he got called up to the big league club in 2012. In December of that year he got shipped off to the Rays in a big multi player trade that actually had James Shields and Wade Davis.
He spent some time in the Minors before being traded to the Mariners where he started his big league stint. He had his first start in June 2015 against the Yankees where he actually had a really good game for his first start. Mr. Montgomery posted a one run, four hits, and walking two while striking out four game. Nice quality start for the first call up. Cool stat he was the first Left hander to have a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
The Cubs got him in a 2016 in a trade that included Dan Vogelbach and Paul Blackburn. The rest they say is history.
