Deshaun Watson will compete for the starting job against Tom Savage with the Houston Texans
The starting job for the Houston Texans will be up in the air as DeShaun Watson and Tom Savage will battle it out in training camp
“We want to provide a competitive environment across the board. So [Watson will] compete,” Smith said Thursday on the Stephen A. Smith Show on ESPN Radio. “[But] like I said, we feel good about Tom and his abilities to manage the offense. But yeah, [Watson] will come in, and just like every other guy on the roster, he’ll have time to play.”
DeShaun Watson is going to start for the Texans this year. I am going to call my shot. I don’t think that it’s that far out on a limb either. It’s a no-brainer for me. Tom Savage even with a lot of more experience doesn’t jump at me as a franchise quarterback. He only started three games last season anyway, and only five games total in the NFL. If he were a better player, he would have made his way to the starting position by now. The Houston Texans are a quarterback away from being a dominant player in the playoffs. In the NFL there is such a small chance that a rookie can come in and be a competent player at the position. I made a point to watch Watson play a lot last season, and he shows me, with some NFL coaching, he can be a good quarterback in the league. He has issues with accuracy which is the huge red flag but making a simple offense for him should take care of that.
I am not a fan of the Texans, but I just want to see more teams in the NFL stand a chance. The defense at 100% should be enough for Deshaun Watson to step in and make his team much more competitive.
