Yankees bested the Chicago Cubs in an 18 inning marathon game
The over six-hour affair ending with a throwing error by the Chicago Cubs as the Yankees won in the 18th inning to end this nightmare
I’m not going to lie to you I turned this game off the minute Ellsbury hit the home run to put them up 4-1. It was a moment for me that if I were a lesser man, I would have broken my TV. I just didn’t want to see another heartbreaker of a loss to the damn Yankees, a team I will always hate. To my surprise this morning when I saw the game had gone to 18 innings and they still lost off a damn throwing error. It would have marked a sweep of the series for the Yankees and just a terrible showing for the Chicago Cubs. I also didn’t want to see Champman come in again and shut the Cubs down in the ninth. For all the excitement I had for the guy last season it quickly turned to hate the second he went back to the Yankees. I knew at the time he was a rent a player, but still, my feeling went right back to hate towards Champman.
There were some real positives in this game for the Cubs. Besides the same old story of the pitching staff not being able to get out of the first without the opposing team scoring a run, Jon Lester had a great outing. He went seven innings giving up only three hits and striking out nine. Lester right now is the rock of the Chicago pitching staff. He is to the staff what Kyle Hendricks was last season, every start he is giving you a quality outing. Anthony Rizzo after the game is trying to put a positive spin on it by saying the game brought the team together.
“Games like this definitely can bring both sides together. I know they won, Yankees, but I think both teams are going to be better off after this game coming together as a unit,”
Baez hit a sky-high home run in the bottom of the third after he fouled a ball off the top of his foot. The home run was lost to Aaron Hicks in left field as he just stood there with his hands up in the air. Javier Baez needs to get going now being such a streaky hitter. This team needs a spark right now, and Kris Bryant is carrying this team offensively right now.

The Cubs need to make a move to get a new arm in that bullpen. I’m going to be looking for a move soon maybe today to get Eddie Butler up to the big league club. If anything but to give these guys a rest. But it’s obvious to me that we don’t have the stuff and looks like Justin Grimm has taken a step back this year.
The stat line of the game came off a 48 combined strikeouts in this game which the previous record was 43 in 1971 during a 20 inning game between the Angels and Oakland As.
The winning run scored off a throwing error in a play at the plate. It’s not too hard to say that the Cubs have a real problem this year with their defense. Another two errors in this game, both throwing errors that eventually led to the Yankees winning the game.
