Cardinals are a Bunch of Cheats
For Cubs fans that haven’t really heard much about this I’ll explain what happened, what the penalty is and why I feel bad for St. Louis.
This should say baseball’s dumbest cheaters but whatever. Here is what happened. First I want to say that I wish there was another word for what they did. Hacking sounds like they did some sophisticated program or person that knows what they are doing or they employed some guy from Russia. What really happened is the current GM of the Astros Jeff Luhnow left his job with the Cardinals in 2011. When he went over to Houston he set up a computer system with the same passwords he used when on the Cardinals. Here is some quotes from the NEW York Times:
The intrusion did not appear to be sophisticated, the law enforcement officials said … Investigators believe Cardinals officials, concerned that Mr. Luhnow had taken their idea and proprietary baseball information to the Astros, examined a master list of passwords used by Mr. Luhnow and the other officials who had joined the Astros when they worked for the Cardinals. The Cardinals officials are believed to have used those passwords to gain access to the Astros’ network, law enforcement officials said.
In my stupid opinion what an asshole this Luhnow has got to be. I hope Houston holds this dude at least a little accountable for being this stupid. How can you not? In this day in age how can you not think this would happen. But anyway when the Astros noticed there was some funny business and it was just some dudes at a regular computer the FBI caught them super easily.
So what did they steal?
Really nothing. They were checking out an analytics tool that Jeff had made for the Astros but it wasn’t anything new maybe just a little flashier, since he made the same one in St. Louis. The guys also got a little mention of some trade rumors but that’s all they were was rumors. The only reason they did this was because they hated the guy.
There is really nothing to base a penalty off of since this is the first time something like this has happened. What the MLB did was give the Astros 2 1st round draft picks from this year and $2,000,000 from the Cardinals. That sucks because the Astros are getting young and DEEP and if they hit on these 2 might be a little force to recon with soon in the future.
The ringleader of the group Chris Correa pleaded guilty in a federal court earlier this month to 5 counts of unauthorized access to a computer. The Astros are claiming that this guy’s actions cost them $1.7 mil in draft picks with information that he took. Doesn’t make sense to me but whatever.
Why I feel bad for St. Louis?
Because It’s St. Louis and it’s by far the worst city in America and now their baseball team sucks. GO CUBS!!!
