Atlanta Motor Speedway Recap
People say that penalties kill and in this race, it did all day. There were all sorts of pit errors left and right that just killed momentum by most drivers today. There were 13 penalties in the pits this weekend. Jimmie Johnson who is the master at this track had two of them and ruined his day.
This race was Kevin Harvick’s to lose and he did just that. A really late error, speeding in the pits, caused him to be put in the back of the pack during a restart with 14 laps left. Harvick clearly had the best car all day leading every lap of the race up until then.
“I was going to fast on pit road, apparently,” Harvick said. “I really hate it for everybody on this team. They put a great car under me and did everything we thought we needed to do. I knew I needed to be close to pit road speed because we were having trouble getting out of the box, but I didn’t think I was pushing it that close. … I was too fast.”
What I thought was going to happen all day didn’t. The drivers held together pretty good all day not having one crash. With how everyone was slipping around during qualifying and practice, I thought for sure there would be a lot of fireworks during the race. To my disappointment, there was not.
The whole day it was a pretty straight forward race. Harvick won both the first two stages while it seemed like lapping everyone. I thought we would see some better racing out of the Busch brothers but that didn’t pan out.
It was the first time in a long while we saw major players batteries fail them. Two Childress guys both Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman ended their days early going into the garage to get them changed. I couldn’t get over how hard it was to get to the actual battery in their cars. Big blow for Ryan Newman in this race because he had a really good car all day.
Clint Bowyer is having a reoccurring theme so far in this short year. He has really good cars all day then wrecks or gets wrecked. I think that for the long haul this guy is my pick to click. If the crew can just get it together I see a lot of top 10 finishes for Clint this year.
All in all a good race this weekend. Next weekend will be at Las Vegas.
