Just a few weeks into the new Congress, Ocasio-Cortez is already causing heartburn among centrist Democrats who are wary of her unapologetic proposal to raise the top marginal income tax rate to 70 per cent.

Her chief of staff also fired back at House Democratic lawmakers who spoke to Politico about Ocasio-Cortez.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tapped into the nerd fanbase motherlode Friday when she quoted Watchmen author Alan Moore.

Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in line to be appointed to the House Financial Services Committee, according to a Politico report.

House democrats are apparently so exasperated by newly elected New York Congresswoman, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, that they're willingly going on record saying they'd like to "rein" her in.

According to Politico, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) said, "I'm sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there's nearly an outstanding rule: Don't attack your own people".

With more than 2 million followers on Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez uses the power of social media to address issues on her terms. The former vice-presidential nominee, who retired in 2013 after being a US Senator for 24 years, insisted that the Democrats will only be losing public support if they adopt, what he called, her "left-left" views as their own.

The New York legislator has vowed to take on the industry that makes up the corporate backbone for much of her constituency. "She doesn't understand how the place works yet".

"There's a difference between being an activist and a lawmaker in Congress", the source said.

How did Ocasio-Cortez respond?

Republicans quoted in local news reports were quick to complain about the apparent hypocrisy, and a Democrat agreed that the oversight did not look good.

"She's new here, feeling her way around", added Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Ore.

"I think that there's a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right", she told host Anderson Cooper.
