NBA To Formally Review Cavaliers' Signing Of Patrick McCaw

The deal was non-guaranteed, and the Warriors declined to match the offer sheet.

Speaking Tuesday before Golden State's game with New York, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he wasn't aware that his team was involved in the review of the McCaw matter.

The NBA will formally investigate the Cleveland Cavaliers' signing of Patrick McCaw, according to a report.

The circumstances were weird and raised questions about Cleveland's motivation to sign and release a player off the roster of their frequent NBA Finals rival. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no details of the probe have been revealed publicly.

How long the league's review will take has not been determined, nor is it clear what the Warriors might be seeking. McCaw's contract with the team was for two years at $6 million, but it was not guaranteed.

"The NBA immediately had suspicions that McCaw and the Cavaliers reached an agreement to waive him so he could become an unrestricted free agent", Medina wrote, citing sources.

Shooting guard Patrick McCaw appeared in three games this season, all with the Cavaliers. Also, the reigning champions would be forced to part with another player on their roster in order to bring back McCaw, likely rookie Alfonzo McKinnie, who has been a pleasant surprise for the team this season.

Some have speculated the Cavaliers made the moves to spite the franchise that beat them in three of the past four NBA Finals.
