1 dead in Sydney Scientology stabbing

A teenager undergoing a mental health assessment in a Sydney hospital is expected to be charged after a 24-year-old Church of Scientology member was fatally stabbed at the organisation's Australasian headquarters.

Jones the stated that "on being escorted down the roadway a knife was produced and with that knife he stabbed a 24-year-old who we believe to be a Taiwanese male in the neck". He was "bleeding heavily" from the neck when paramedics arrived.

The second alleged victim, a 30-year-old man, was treated for minor cuts to his hands but has since been released from hospital and is expected to give a police statement as soon as he is well enough.

"It was a domestic incident, it does not, as far as I know, relate to the Scientology premises here", Detective Chief Inspector Jones said.

"At this stage it's very early".

The victim couldn't be saved, he said.

The two injured men - who police described as Scientology employees - were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

He had dropped a 25cm (10in) knife after being confronted by officers with Tasers, said New South Wales Police.

In video footage of the aftermath of the attack seen by Express.co.uk, police can be seen leading the teenage suspect away from the vast complex on Grenville Street.

The stabbing occurred in the driveway of the sprawling religious centre.

"However resulting from that incident yesterday the staff on premises made a decision he should leave", he said.

The teenagers' mother is believed to be a member of the controversial church.

"We're not going to report anything right now", he said.

The emergency services were alerted to the situation in Sydney's north just after 12.30pm local time (1.30am GMT) on Thursday after the brutal attack unfurled.

Both victims were members of the Scientology center.

The facility, which spans some 145,000 sq. feet, is considered to be the church's biggest center outside the USA territory.

The giant, 13,500 square metre building, opened in September 2016, was bought by the church for a reported $37 million in 2014.
