USA citizen arrested in Russian Federation on spying charges

It said in a statement the American was detained on Friday "while carrying out an act of espionage" and that a criminal case had been opened.

Russia's domestic security agency said Monday that it has arrested a USA citizen on espionage charges.

By Russian law, foreigners found guilty of spying on Russia face between 10 and 20 years in prison.

The US Embassy in Moscow could not immediately be reached for comment.

In the past, Russian Federation has arrested foreigners with the aim of trading prisoners with other countries. "We have requested this access and expect Russian authorities to provide it", the department said.
