Gunman Fires On Car Full Of Girls In Houston, Killing Child

Deputies said the family of five was leaving a Walmart parking lot when an unidentified man in a red pickup truck pulled up to the side of their auto and started shooting. Police say Jazmine Barnes was shot when the suspect pulled up next to the vehicle around 7am and opened fire for no apparent reason, ABC reports.

The 7-year-old girl's mother was shot, too, Gonzalez said.

The 30-year-old Washington was expected to recover from her wound.

Jesse Razo, a major with the Sheriff's Office, said a news briefing that the suspect was driving a red pickup truck with no plates.

Three other girls were in the auto at the time of the shooting, according to the AP.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in posts on social media that Jazmine Barnes along with her mother 30-year-old LaPorsha Washington, as well as three teenage girls were in a vehicle when the attack happened.

Another girl was injured by broken glass, and the two other sisters were not injured, police said. "A total of 5 occupants in the vehicle witnessed this innocent child, their loved one, shot and killed before their eyes".

Razo says the other girls inside the auto are "shaken" and "devastated". "So senseless. It's never easy, and extra hard during the holiday season".

"We are going to use all resources available to bring this killer to justice", Razo said.

"The motive is unknown right now", Senior Deputy Thomas Gilliland, Harris County sheriff's office spokesman, said in a statement to CNN. "I urge you, whoever did this, you know who you are".

The suspect, who was still at large as of Sunday morning, "is considered armed and unsafe", Razo told reporters.
