Mattis signs troop withdrawal order after Trump ‘fires’ him on Twitter

Trump says the U.S. is substantially subsidising the militaries of very rich countries all over the world. In his resignation letter, Mattis said that his views and Trump's did not "align" and that his "over four decades" of experience taught him the value of alliances, such as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and of standing strong against adversaries like China and Russian Federation.

Shanahan, 56, did not serve in the military and has little foreign policy and government experience. Historically when a secretary has resigned, he has stayed on until a successor is confirmed.

"He is one of the most effective generals that we've had in many, many decades, an extraordinary leader of our time who has committed his life to his love for our country", Trump said in a December 6, 2016, speech announcing the nomination. Mattis' resignation letter was delivered shortly after Trump's decision to announce a unilateral USA withdrawal from Syria and a decision to also leave the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

The two brothers talked after Trump had made his decision.

On Saturday, Trump appeared to fire back at Mattis on social media, tweeting that "when President Obama ingloriously fired Jim Mattis, I gave him a second chance".

Referring to the Mattis resignation, former FBI Director James Comey pungently tweeted, "To a president without any external ethical framework, folks who resign on principle must be confusing".

Shanahan, in his job as deputy defense secretary, has largely focused on internal Pentagon reform and issues like the creation of a Space Force, a project championed by Trump but resisted by some lawmakers and some in the Pentagon.

Brett McGurk, the US envoy to the global coalition combating the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, resigned shortly after Mattis' decision.

Carl Bernstein speaks during the 2017 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at Washington Hilton on April 29, 2017, in Washington, D.C. Bernstein said more Republicans believe President Donald Trump is "unfit to be president of the United States" after reading Defense Secretary James Mattis's resignation letter.

Earlier Sunday, Trump's acting chief of staff said that Trump had known for "quite some time now" that he and Mattis "did not share some of the same philosophies ... have the same world view". It is hard work, but this is nothing new; since Washington crossed the DE on Christmas Day in 1776, American troops have missed holidays to defend our citizens' experiment in democracy.

Mr Trump wrote: "I just had a long and productive call with President @RT_Erdogan of Turkey". Let's hope that we see more of that in the New Year.
