Senate passes Farm Bill; hemp closer to becoming a legal commodity

"It has been a privilege to work so closely with them to ensure that Kansas ag priorities were included in our final bill", Marshall said.

In the past, the farm bill has bounced around Washington for months (or even years) before finally getting approved.

He continued: "I am constantly correcting that notion".

The bill had big wins for organic aficionados, outdoorsy types, and fans of sustainable agriculture - but some greens are disappointed that we're still spending billions to shore up the bottom line for farmers. Trump and conservatives had pushed to create new work requirements for food stamps, but the Senate rejected the idea. Hemp production is now permitted only for licensed farmers in Minnesota, is under a pilot program for licensed farmers in North Dakota and is prohibited in South Dakota (though there have been some recent efforts to change that). The farm bill proposed by House Republicans had also proposed merging the Conservation Stewardship Program, which pays farmers to strengthen conservation efforts on their farms, into another branch of the Agriculture Department.

As far as congressional staffers who want to file lawsuits against lawmakers, House staffers would also have access to House counsel to pursue claims, while Senate staffers would not.

"They're all made possible because of the funding that the farm bill would provide", she said.

"I want to be clear that I support the House having a full, complete, and open debate on US military support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, especially in light of recent events", he wrote on Twitter. "I am glad that we were able to pass a bill today that includes many positive provisions for our farmers", Sanders said. The legislation has already passed the Senate and is now headed to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.

House and Senate lawmakers formed a conference committee to bridge the differences between their versions of the bill on July 18.

North Central Florida Congressman Neal Dunn released a statement following the passing of the bill including: "While not flawless, the 2018 farm bill gives certainty to our farmers, foresters, and ranchers at a time when many producers are struggling". The program will survive under the final version of the bill, aides said. "I couldn't be more proud, and I hope that producers back at home know that we listened!" .

"This is a Farm Bill that will provide certainty to the nation's struggling farmers; maintain food security for millions of American families; provide for cleaner waterways, better soils, protected open space, healthier forests, and the preservation of family farms; make our drinking water safer; and give communities across rural America a much needed economic boost", Leahy said.
