Trump picks Gen. Mark Milley as next top military adviser

US President Donald Trump has nominated four-star Gen. Mark Milley as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing Joseph Dunford.

Trump is believed to have chosen Gen. Mark Milley, who has served as Army chief of staff since 2015, as the 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs, two USA officials told Stars and Stripes, confirming reports Friday by the New York Times and Washington Post.

General Joseph Dunford's term as chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff is scheduled to end in October 2019

Dunford is scheduled to retire in October 2019 at the end of his second two-year term. "I am thankful to both of these incredible men for their service to our Country!" he said. Trump said on Twitter. Officials had said the Air Force chief, Gen. David Goldfein, was also a strong contender for the job.

After becoming Chief of Staff of the Army in 2015, Milley helped oversee the army's transition away from large-scale counterinsurgency campaigns in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, focusing instead on near-peer challenges from Russian Federation and China.

Milley was also involved in the launch of Army Futures Command which is tasked with helping modernize the service.

Milley's nomination will need to be confirmed by the Senate. He would take the position for a four-year term, after a new law was passed last year doubling the term length to better ensure continuity. Trump offered a "little hint" to reporters on the White House lawn Friday that he'd be making an announcement about this post, though he noted at the time he'd be filling everyone in at the Army-Navy game later Saturday afternoon.

Two defense officials tell CNN that Milley and Trump will be together on the Army side of the field during tomorrow's game and then Trump is expected to visit the Navy side during the second half of the game.

The game features cadets from the Naval Academy against their counterparts from the US Military Academy and is often attended by the president. Normally an announcement on a new chairman wouldn't be expected until early next year.
