Russian Federation offered Trump campaign political co-op in 2015, United States prosecutors say

In court filings, federal prosecutors in NY and those working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller made the case for why Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, deserved prison time. "Thank you!" Trump tweeted cryptically as television networks were consumed by the Cohen documents - which the White House dismissed as revealing "nothing of value". They said his sentence should reflect a "modest" reduction from the four to five years they said federal guidelines would suggest.

The former fixer last week pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in connection with a Moscow real estate deal, which was being pursued as late as one month before Trump officially became the Republican nominee for president.

The memo said Cohen played a "central role" in two schemes to keep porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal silent about alleged affairs they had with Trump.

Robert Mueller is set to reveal more details about his Russian Federation investigation on Friday as he faces court deadlines in the cases of two men who worked closely with President Donald Trump.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel heading up the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 vote, followed up with a separate filing saying Cohen had made "substantial and significant efforts to remediate his misconduct, accept responsibility for his actions, and assist" the special investigation, a thorn in Trump's side.

Prosecutors say Cohen "already enjoyed a privileged life", and that "his desire for even greater wealth and influence precipitated an extensive course of criminal conduct".

Cohen, citing the fact he has co-operated with investigators, had requested a sentence of no prison time.

He had provided information about contacts with Russian interests during the campaign, attempts by Russians to reach the campaign and about contacts with "persons connected to the White House" in 2017-2018, the filing added.

"Totally clears the president".

In hours of meetings with prosecutors, Cohen detailed his intimate involvement in an array of episodes, including some that directly touch the president, that are at the center of investigations into campaign finance violations and potential collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. But prosecutors say they recovered "electronic documents" showing contacts with multiple administration officials not identified in the filings.

In Manafort's case, prosecutors are expected to lay out what torpedoed the cooperation agreement he made when he pleaded guilty in September to two felony charges of conspiracy.

The meeting didn't take place. "But Cohen's description of those efforts is overstated in some respects and incomplete in others". But the NY prosecutors were unsparing in their descriptions of his conduct, saying he was motivated by "personal greed" and that he "repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends".

Mueller said on Friday that Cohen repeated his false statements about the project in his first meeting with Mueller's office, admitting the truth only in a later meeting in September after he had pleaded guilty to the separate NY charges.
