National Influenza Vaccination Week: Monmouth County encourages residents to get their vaccines

The Clover Health Flu Shot Monitor included key findings for New Jersey. Who is at the highest risk for having complications from it? Back in 2015-16, Kaweah Delta began requiring all staff to either get a flu vaccination or wear a face mask during cold and flu season.

Of course, the flu shot isn't ideal - the CDC says its effectiveness varies, generally reducing your risk by 40 to 60 percent. More serious adverse events are rare.

"Influenza may be familiar, but should never be overlooked or accepted as a minor problem", said Dr. Alexia Harrist, Wyoming state epidemiologist, in a news release this fall.

And, communicating the concept of "herd immunity" improves an individual's willingness to get vaccinated. Influenza A was found in 91.5% of public health lab samples, compared with 8.5% of samples showing influenza B. Of the influenza A virus samples subtyped, 82.2% are 2009 H1N1.

Serious reactions to the flu vaccine are rare.

Over the last two years Kaweah Delta's efforts to help their staff stave off the flu has made them a leader, along with five other hospitals, in the state.

How well the influenza vaccine works (or its ability to prevent influenza illness) can range widely from season to season.

While receiving your flu shot, inquire about other vaccinations that you may need.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, in the 2017-18 flu season, there were 435 deaths from the flu, with 6,446 hospitalizations. If, however, you have symptoms of flu and are in a high risk group, are very sick or anxious about your illness, contact your health care provider.

The two main factors in the effectiveness of the vaccine is the health of the patient and the match between the influenza viruses that the influenza vaccine is created to protect against and the influenza viruses spreading in the community.

Although the National Health Agency states that all adults can "benefit" from vaccinations, it only officially recommends that those 65 and over, pregnant woman and "persons with certain underlying diseases" get an annual influenza vaccination. In some cases, people were exposed to the flu before their immune system had time to build a response to the flu vaccine.

Anything else regarding the importance of vaccinations for influenza that you think is important for our readers to know? "I also refer them to the Centers for Disease Control website, cdc.gov, which provides up to date information for healthcare providers and the public", said Mayer.
