Nation set to say goodbye to Bush

People lined Pennsylvania Avenue as the hearse passed by carrying the remains of former President George H.W. Bush.

Celebrities, including actor-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, were among the mourners at the church where the Bush family worships. The Navy is planning a 21-aircraft missing man formation for the interment ceremony of the former president at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas, on Thursday.

For all the somber tributes to the late president's public service and strength of character, laughter filled the cathedral time after time.

Bush "was America's last great soldier statesman", presidential historian Jon Meacham told the guests. "This loathing of Trump is a force of nature that is orders of magnitude greater than what they felt about Bush", he explained, adding that many in the media later realized they "badly misjudged" his presidency.

He was one of the five living United States commanders in chief at the event; Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama all attended along with President Donald Trump. "A genuine leader. One who was distinguished, resolute and fearless", Mulroney, a longtime friend of Bush, said at the National Cathedral in Washington.

It was a family that occupied the White House for a dozen years - the 41st president defeated after one term, the 43rd serving two.

Bush was a decorated World War II aviator who almost lost his life when he was shot down on a bombing mission.

The US President's awkward exchange came after Trump tweeted about oil prices as mourners gathered in Washington for the funeral.

Bush died last week in Houston at age 94.

As Cuomo argued that shaking hands with Trump showed that, Lemon doubled down, "That's why he's president and I'm not".

After handing his coat over, Trump sat down and shook hand with Barack and Michelle Obama before snubbing the Clintons. Former Sen. Bob Dole, a compatriot in war, peace and political struggle, steadied himself out of his wheelchair and saluted his old friend and one-time rival. It's the same church where services for Bush's wife, Barbara, were held in April.

A patrician figure, Bush was voted out of office in part for failing to connect with ordinary Americans during an economic recession. Trump recently ran against Jeb Bush for the Republican nomination in 2016.
