They also released a picture of the dropped jewellery, saying: "We have your ring!".

"Thank you, Twitter. Case closed!" the NYPD posted Sunday afternoon, along with a photo of the happy couple.

All was not lost - police found the ring at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The tweet has garnered over 13,000 likes and 8,800 retweets in the same time.

The couple then left the area.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill used his own Twitter feed in hopes of locating the couple.

Some 355,000 people pass through Times Square on an average day.

Proposing in New York's Times Square may seem like a romantic idea, but pick your spot carefully!

Police are looking to identify a couple after an engagement ring was recovered from a utility grate in Times Square. He asked a police officer for help opening the grate, but they couldn't get it open.

"WANTED for dropping his fiancée's ring in @TimesSquareNYC", the NYPD tweeted.

Unfortunately for the couple, the NYPD does not have the couple's details, therefore it can't reunite them with the ring.

But a happy ending was coming for what the department called its "almost engaged" couple.
