Female Cop Indicted For Murder Of Botham Jean, DA Cites

A former US police officer in Dallas, Texas, the United States was indicted on a murder charge on Friday for killing an unarmed man in his apartment, according to court records.

I want to thank the Dallas community for the persons who have been rallying with us during this most hard time, my county St Lucia, the entire population of St Lucia has been on alert with the expectation that the grand jury would have returned an indictment for murder. She said she couldn't discuss the evidence presented to the grand jury, but previously explained it was the Texas Rangers who pursued the manslaughter charge. The manslaughter charge she was initially facing carried a maximum penalty of 20 years.

Guyger has claimed she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment, believing it was her own and she shot what she believed was an intruder the night of September 6 at the Southside Flats.

She originally claimed she mistakenly went to his apartment rather than her own when she shot him. She was later fired from the Dallas Police Department, and Jean's family has filed a lawsuit against Guyger and the city.

The grand jury Friday handed down an indictment to Amber Guyger, 30, who was arrested almost three months ago and charged with manslaughter.

Her attorney, Robert Rogers, said he was not surprised by the indictment, citing the political pressure surrounding the case and a wave of "vindictive emotion" targeting his client.

The Dallas County court records were posted Friday before authorities were set to announce a grand jury's decision on the fate of Amber Guyger. Jean was black. Guyger is white. Jean lived on the fourth floor of the apartment complex, while Guyger lived directly below him on the third floor.

Guyger walked into the apartment after returning from a work shift and was able to enter because Jean's door was slightly ajar, according to a Texas law enforcement account of the incident. He said Jean's mother testified before the grand jury, which he described as highly unusual. She had already been arrested again and released on bond, Johnson said at the news conference. The lights were off inside and when she saw a man's figure, she thought her apartment was being robbed and opened fire.

Johnson said murder constitutes someone "intentionally and knowingly" committing a crime, whereas manslaughter involves "recklessly doing something".

"I look forward to the next step, which is a conviction of murder of Amber Guyger and also of a penalty, the proper penalty, that will cause her to reflect on what she has done", Allison Jean said. Jean worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and hailed from Saint Lucia. Amber Guyger, the officer who killed Jean, was sacked by Hall following the shooting.
