Santiago Bernabeu 'to host delayed Copa Libertadores final'

Real Madrid's stadium will be the first outside South America to host a Copa Libertadores match, and while it is in unique circumstances, some are concerned that it could be the first of many instances in which finals take place thousands of miles from each team's ground. Visiting fans were prohibited from attending the two-legged final when it was staged in Argentina.

The "biggest derby in world football" was suspended when Boca players were injured after a group of River fans attacked their team bus on the way to El Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. However, three Boca players were left needing medical attention when River fans attacked Boca's bus as it approached the stadium and the game was delayed until Sunday and then postponed indefinitely. The away goals rule is not used in the Copa Libertadores final.

With the tie poised at 2-2 following the first leg at La Bombonera on 11 November, Boca players were left injured by shards of broken glass and affected by tear gas, which was sacked by police to disperse the crowd outside River Plate's El Monumental stadium.

CONMEBOL rejected an appeal by Boca to be awarded the match without playing the second leg due to the violence.

However, that was thrown out by the Disciplinary Tribunal on Thursday, with River forced to play two CONMEBOL-organised games behind closed doors and fined.

Boca's decision casts doubt over the timing of the rearranged second leg.

The Copa Libertadores is the showpiece club competition in South America, equivalent to the Champions League in Europe. South America's participant doesn't begin play until the semifinals on December 18. The G20 summit, which began in Buenos Aires on Friday, is going to have to go some ways to match the knot of complaints that have dominated the local media since November 24, when the original tie was supposed to take place.
