Oprah Winfrey's Mother Vernita Lee Dies at Age 83

Oprah Winfrey's mother Vernita Lee died at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thanksgiving last week.

Their relationship healed over time and Lee was featured getting a makeover on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1990.

On the same day that her mother passed away, Winfrey shared an Instagram video of her preparing for her Thanksgiving festivities.

Her family said to People Magazine that she died in their home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was laid to rest during a private funeral.

Lee has two daughters, Winfrey, and Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, who she gave up for adoption but later connected with as an adult.

Winfrey lived with her grandmother for six years.

Lee is survived by her daughters as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Oprah moved to Nashville to live with her father permanently in 1968 while she was secretly pregnant at 14. Lee gave birth to Oprah's younger half-sister, who died in 2003. She was 83 years old. No details of her cause of death have been released. Memorial donations in Vernita's name may be made to Feeding America'. I don't know anybody.

"When you walk into a room, you never walk alone", Winfrey said during a recent speech.

Her brother Jeffrey died of AIDS in 1989, and Patricia, who died in 2003.

"I'm a Christian lady, and if you're a Christian person, it helps you to deal with situations like that", she said of dealing with the deaths of her two children, People reported.

Vernita explained that she never told Oprah about her half-sister "because I thought it was a awful thing for me to do".
