She says "there is a lot of bad in this world, but there is also a lot of good and people will help". The patrolmen pulled the sergeant from the line of fire, and Helus was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead early Thursday.

There were hundreds of people packed inside Borderline Bar and Grill when a gunman burst inside throwing smoke grenades and firing dozens of rounds, witnesses and authorities said.

"And tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives".

The shooting happened at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, a city of around 130,000 people some 40 miles from Los Angeles. The bar was hosting a college country music night.

People were hiding the bar's restrooms and in its attic, Dean said.

The gunman was dead inside the bar, Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow said, but did not say how he died. That number includes a sheriff's deputy, Sgt. Helus.

Twelve people, including a police officer, have been killed after a gunman opened fire in a southern California bar. Another witness said: "This maniac came in".

Helus was one of the first on the scene and was struck multiple times when he went through the front door, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect was found down with a gunshot wound when the officers entered the building, the sheriff said.

No other information has yet been released.

It is thought the gunman may still be at large and at least police officer is injured.

"I don't know the severity of the injuries, I don't know if any are life threatening or not, but there are no reported fatalities".

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office confirmed the casualties, according to The New York Times.

Police tell the Los Angeles Times that at least 30 shots were fired. The shooter is suspected to have used a semi-automatic gun and smoke bombs.

He claimed the neighborhood of West Hills, California, just 18 miles from Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, as his hometown, according to his Facebook profile, which has been refashioned into a "Remembering Ron Helus" page.

Holden Harrah, who was at the bar, told CNN the shooter walked in and opened fire within seconds. The first law enforcement personnel arrived on scene at 11:22 p.m., and made entry four minutes later, officials said.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.
