Drunk man arrested for mounting horse at Breeders Cup

"These horses, the field, they've made over $36 million - that's remarkable", said USA trainer Bob Baffert - who saddled Classic winners in 2014, "15 and '16 but has never won the biggest Breeders" Cup prize when the two-day, 14-race festival has been held beneath Churchill's twin spires in Louisville, Kentucky.

It would be hard to dethrone Justify, racing's 13th Triple Crown victor, for the award, but the 3-year-old retired this summer after just six lifetime races against his own age group. Ridden by John Velazquez, Sistercharlie gradually moved up against a very slow pace and got her nose ahead of Wild Illusion in the final strides.

Game victor found himself chasing 40-1 long shot Knicks Go as the field turned onto the long Churchill Downs stretch and that one proved tough to reel in. Game victor, a Candy Ride colt owned by Gary and Mary West, ran 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:43.67. The Kentucky Oaks victor provided trainer Brad Cox with his first Cup win.

"He likes Churchill Downs so that's a good sign", Baffert said with a laugh. "That's a good sign", he said. Frankie was determined to stay wide for the better ground, but Hunting Horn was attending us all the way and then Ryan Moore slipped up our inner on Magical. But it might be very tempting to try to have a shot at being the first three-time Arc victor. To win the Santa Anita Handicap (in March) was for me probably one or two on my bucket list.

Accelerate aims to make it six wins in seven starts this year as the 5-2 favorite in the 1 1/4-mile headliner.

Though unable to seriously threaten the victor, Restless Rider was able to hold off Vibrance by a 1/2-length. The favorite, Bellafina, raced right behind the victor into the stretch but ran out of gas and was all out to finish fourth. She has now won nine races in a row, including the Turf, two Arcs, two Classics and the King George at Ascot.

Dettori, winning his fifth Turf, exclaimed: "She's conquered America and is the first one to do it!"

Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Joel Rosario, Game Winner went wide on two turns before powering down the stretch, pulling away from Knicks Go after the two brushed briefly to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

"She ran the way she was training", said trainer Brad Cox. Amazing, I've no words to say how brilliant she is.

Part owner Jonathan Green said the entire ownership team is excited about the chance of a Kentucky Oaks victor. Somelikeithotbrown led the field into deep stretch and held on for third.

In other Breeders' Cup action, European shipper Line of Duty captured the $1-million Juvenile Turf. He jumped from that to a victory in the Group 2 Prix de Conde at Chantilly in France Oct. 1 before heading for Kentucky.

Meanwhile, Frankie Dettori believes "records are there to be broken" as Enable gears up for the feature Breeders' Cup Turf tomorrow.

"They either take it or they don't".

"I think the most important thing is to sit back and enjoy this", Grimthorpe said. "That's another plus point for his performance". I was waiting for her to give me the message that she was ready to go, and I could see Magical on my inside.

Friday's first day set aside for 2-year-olds could help establish the contenders. Stellar Agent was third. He won two again on Saturday with the same horses. Justify never ran against older horses, even though he couldn't because he got hurt, but still, he didn't do it. She did it today with sheer guts and determination. Asked if the filly now is a superstar, Brown said, "She is on her way". Often featuring U.S. Horse of the Year candidates and notoriously more hard to predict, the event began on Friday from Louisville with the first of 14 races.

Newspaperofrecord, an Irish-bred filly, is by Lope de Vega, out of the Holy Roman Emperor mare Sunday Times - solid English and Irish breeding.

"We're watching where the rain is going, a little north of us at the moment, so you never know we might not get drowned".

In posting his 2 3/4-length victory, City of Light was paired with jockey Javier Castellano for the first time in a race.

Murphy, who is due to partner his domestic Group One winners Roaring Lion and Lightning Spear tomorrow, now leads the standings in the race to become the Longines World's Best Jockey.

Gunnevera, Thunder Snow and early pace setter Mendelssohn made things interesting before 70,423, an upside to the absence of horse racing's 13th Triple Crown victor from the Classic.

"He broke really well", Rosario said of Accelerate. "We're prepared for the worst and hope for the best". WinStar's Elliott Walden added, "He started so fast, Javier lost an iron".
