'Father of Taliban' Mullah Sami ul-Haq shot dead in Pakistan's Rawalpindi

On his return, he saw that Maulana Sami was lying in his bed in a pool of bed. The prime minister said Maulana Sami-ul-Haq was a great scholar of Islam.

He was a religious scholar and former Senator.

Haq was known as the "Father of the Taliban" because he trained some of the leaders of the Islamist movement in Afghanistan.

Haq was the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania.

JUI-S's Peshawar president also confirmed the chief's death following an assassination attempt in Rawalpindi.

Haq's seminary has continued to thrive in Pakistan, including being allocated funding in the budgets of the provincial government, which is headed by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

He had also served as a member of the Senate.

The news of his death comes at a sensitive time, with religio-political parties out on the streets protesting the Supreme Court's acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, in a blasphemy case.

A spokesman for the military condemned the "assassination" and expressed "grief and condolences" to his family. In a statement from Beijing, where he is now on visit to China, the Prime Minister directed to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

"It was really sad to hear the news of the martyrdom of Maulana Samiul Haq", Nawaz said, praying the Almighty to have mercy on Pakistan.

Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi has also condemned the assasination.

However, initial reports had said that Haq had been shot. Haq had emerged as one of Khan's allies since the PTI came to power in the province after elections in 2013.
