Pittsburgh shooting suspect Robert Bowers pleads not guilty

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he and first lady Melania Trump "were treated very nicely" during their Tuesday visit to Pittsburgh to pay their respects to victims of this weekend's anti-Semitic shooting.

Stones used as part of a makeshift memorial outside the Tree of Life Synagogue to the 11 people killed during worship services on Saturday October 27 in Pittsburgh.

The attack is believed to be the deadliest against the Jewish community in the United States.

The visit came as mourners attended the first funerals for victims of the massacre.

"You know what? They wrote exactly what I feel".

"They were innocent like boys, not hardened like men", the Rosenthals' sister, Diane Hirt, told mournerse.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged Bowers with 44 counts, including using a firearm to commit murder and other hate crimes, such as obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and obstructing the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer.

Bowers, who was shot and wounded during a gun battle that injured four police officers, walked into court under his own power, his left arm heavily bandaged.

One person was arrested during the protests.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump found his visit to be "very humbling" and "very sad" and that he was "incredibly impressed" by Myers. They later went to a hospital to visit with survivors.

The president and his wife were joined by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, his daughter and son-in-law who are Jewish and serve as White House advisers, and by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is also Jewish.

Brothers David and Cecil Rosenthal, who were aged 54 and 59, were among the first to be buried. Jerry Rabinowitz at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill.

"A lot of people are feeling really angry about this". The massacre was prosecuted as a hate crime. "It's just such a loss".

A couple becomes emotional before leaving flowers at the Tree of Life synagogue two days after the shooting.

As he stood in line at the funeral, Friedman wondered why he had been spared.

"He's so big. I mean, he's a little guy, and he's bigger than life", she told CNN's Anderson Cooper.
