Whitey Bulger found dead after transfer to West Virginia prison

He became one of the nation's most-wanted fugitives after fleeing Boston in late 1994.

Notorious gangster James "Whitey" Bulger was found dead Tuesday at a West Virginia federal prison, hours after the 89-year-old Boston native had been transferred to the facility.

Whitey Bulger as he was arrested by the FBI, June 22, 2011. He was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences plus five years.

Bulger was the head of the Winter Hill Gang, a violent South Boston crime ring, from the 1970 into the '90s. His father, James moved to MA from Harbour Grace as a child after his grandfather died. His dark life story also inspired several other films, such as The Departed, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2006. Salemme and Weadick were both sentenced to life in the case. He also suggested the trio look up to figures such as his younger brother, William Bulger, who served as the president of the MA state senate.

The details of his death have not been announced, but a local union official for correctional workers at the prison told CBS that a "homicide" occurred on Tuesday morning.

Bulger would pen notes on his lawyer's legal pad at his cell in MA back in 2014 and have them delivered via his lawyer to Greig who was detained at a Rhode Island Jail at the time.

Department of Justice officials confirmed the death in a letter. But in his case, it was never clear who was informing to who.

"And my thing is, as far as I'm concerned, I didn't get a fair trial", Bulger said, when he revealed he would not testify.
