First legal purchase of recreational pot made in Canada at Newfoundland store

The most populous province is working on its regulations and doesn't expect stores until next spring. This is never actually going to be smoked.

Stores in St. John's in the Atlantic island province of Newfoundland were due to open their doors to pot enthusiasts as of 12:01 am local time (0231 GMT) on Wednesday. Canada grows a lot of marijuana already, legally for medical purposes and illegally for the black market.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection invited Canadian media to a conference call on Tuesday so officials could reiterate that marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law and that those who are caught at the border with pot are subject to arrest and prosecution.

If a buyer accepting a package containing cannabis appears to be younger than 25, the Canada Post delivery person may ask for identification to verify the age.

None of the Vancouver stores that were licensed by the city while marijuana was federally illegal have been approved to stay open Wednesday, and some are expected to voluntarily close until their applications are granted.

They will also be allowed to cultivate up to four plants in their households and make products such as edibles for personal use.

"I'm looking forward to buying it and having it as a memory of tonight", she said.

The prime minister repeated his oft-stated view that a regulated market for marijuana - a pillar of his 2015 election campaign - will keep cannabis out of the hands of Canadian kids and combat the flourishing black market.

Officials in Nova Scotia and Manitoba said they won't have a large selection, at least not on the first day, CNN affiliate CBC News reported.

The Ontario Cannabis Store has products from dozens of different suppliers, each labelled with the level of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) inside, as tested by Health Canada. "It's tough to get everything through the bottleneck on a timely basis", University of Waterloo economist Anindya Sen told the San Jose Mercury News.

Trevor Fencott, chief executive of Fire and Flower, said his company has 15 Alberta stores staffed and ready to sell marijuana, but the province has supplied only enough product to open three of them Wednesday.

Authorities will soon announce plans to pardon Canadians who have been convicted with possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana, CNN partner CTV reported.

Linton said he was excited to tender the first sale at the Tweed store across from a provincial courthouse, where countless cases over the years have dealt with cannabis-related charges.

Medical use of the drug has been legal in the country since 2001, with the legislation meant to keep minors from purchasing the drug and profits away from dealers.
