PS4 Messages Designed to Brick Your Console Reported By Users

According to Reddit user Forkrul, the message generally needs to be displayed in some way in order to be effective, however, "the notification can be enough depending on how much of the message it parses". Some users said that a factory reset of the device might erase the message and fix the problem, but others said this didn't work and suggested deleting the message from the PlayStation mobile app, or logging into the account from an internet browser. As a result, this is being used as an exploit in multiplayer games, where players use a dummy account to send the message to opponents, in turn crashing their console and getting them kicked from the match.

Only one team member wasn't affected, apparently because he keeps his PSN messaging set to private. Thankfully, there seems to be a quick and easy preventative measure everyone can take to avoid falling victim to the malicious exploit.

Reddit users seemed to all have stories beginning similarly with "I was beating these guys in x online game" before they received the message. Where the PS Messages app/database rebuild option preserves all the data on your console's hard drive, a factory reset wipes everything.
