Prince Harry, Meghan Markle expecting first child

The baby will be the Queen's eighth great-grandchild, in Kensington Palace.

The Royal Tour Down Under has just got even more exciting with confirmation Prince Harry and wife Meghan are expecting their first child.

"Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public", the palace said in a statement.

The prince and the former actress married in a glittering service in Windsor in May.

There was widespread speculation Meghan was expecting a child after she wore a long, dark blue coat to the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in Windsor on Friday.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who will meet the royal couple and climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge with Prince Harry on Friday, offered his congratulations.

The royal couple and are now in Australia on their first overseas tour.

The Duke and Duchess spent the day resting at Admiralty House in Sydney where they spotted walking hand in hand around the gardens.

United Kingdom journalists in Australia for the royal tour were told the news by phone from London shortly after their arrival, as shown in a photograph from royal expert Emily Nash.

The virus is linked to severe birth defects and was declared as a global medical emergency by the World Health Organization in 2016. Ideally, pregnant women should not travel to these areas but, if they do, they should talk to their doctor first and take measures to prevent mosquito bites.

Harry and Meghan said during a television interview in November that they wanted to promote humanitarian causes close to their hearts across Commonwealth-member countries including Australia. The couple already have a successful 12 week scan of their baby.

Harry and Meghan - along with Prince William and his wife, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge - have stepped to the fore in the previous year as Queen Elizabeth II, 92, slightly reduces her public schedule. The duchess had first found fame as an actress, playing Rachel Zane in United States legal drama Suits, but gave up her career when she got married.
