LEADING OFF: Red Sox seek to clean things up vs Astros

The Red Sox beat the Astros, 7-5, to even the series at a game apiece.

Houston extended the lead in the ninth to 4-2 on a solo shot by Josh Reddick off Workman before Yuli Gurriel hit a three-run homer to right to blow the game open. But Price ran into trouble again in the fifth, and Cora pulled the plug after a two-out walk to Tyler White on four pitches. If the Sox cannot manage to salvage this series by splitting the first two games, they face a tough three game stay in Houston where a return to Boston could be doubtful. Cora has expressed confidence in Price, a Cy Young Award victor who is 0-9 in 10 post-season starts, and the 108-win Red Sox will need him to be better than Sale was in the opener.

Then with two outs in the top of the third inning, Marwin Gonzalez launched a two-run blast over the Green Monster in left field to give the Astros a 4-2 lead. Houston only got one hit off of Sale, but he loaded the bases with two outs in the second on two walks and a hit batter before reigning World Series MVP George Springer singled in two runs past the glove of third baseman Eduardo Nunez, who slipped as he stretched for the ball. After Betts hit into a force play at the plate, the Red Sox tied the game on a wild pitch on a check-swing by Andrew Benintendi, but Verlander ended the at-bat with a called strike three on the left fielder.

On a 3-2 count, Benintendi was rung up on a borderline pitch low and away.

Cora's ejection marks the second straight playoff game against the Astros when the Red Sox manager has been tossed, as John Farrell was ejected during Game 4 of the 2017 American League Division Series.

Game 2 was the first time ever two No. 1 overall picks started against each other in the postseason.

"You can ask any of my teammates for the 10 years I've been in the big leagues - or coaches or anybody that's been around me".

West's inability to dodge the ball may have cost the Astros a base, as Vazquez's throw was likely headed for center field if it didn't smack the ump in the shoulder. "But obviously whenever you have to go to the hospital you've got to be 'worried'".

"We won. That's my first team win as a starter". Price worked around a pair of one-out walks in the first inning, getting out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. "We trust those guys". The Red Sox bullpen, so untrustworthy that manager Alex Cora has three times in six postseason games used starters as relievers, held the lead. "All I want to do is win", Price said. The spotlight will no doubt be back on the lefty whenever he makes his next start, but for now, we're viewing his short outing as a positive. "He was struggling with us, and I don't know if that would have changed had he come back". Then, in regards to the Astros splitting the first two games at Fenway, he added, "We feel good".
