Sony Announces PSN Name Change Beta

Sony Announces PSN Name Change Beta

If you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you get a discount: $5 per name change. It will then roll out to everyone worldwide in early 2019.

After a round of rumors suggesting as much, Sony has confirmed that it will indeed be allowing PlayStation Network users to change their names. The first time you change your name, it will be free. The standard price for a name change is going to be $9.99, and PlayStation Plus members will only need to pay $4.99.

How can I change my PSN name?

Twelve years after debuting its PlayStation Network online service alongside the PlayStation 3, Sony is finally giving users the ability to change their PSN Online ID. Some games released before 1st April 2018 may not play nicely with new names, and in particular this might affect PS3 and PS Vita titles. Players have the option to revert to their original PSN ID if they run into compatibility issues or simply miss the person that they used to be.

When changing your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID for friend recognition purposes.

The PSN name change feature will be available for everyone in early 2019. These links leave Siliconera. If you wish to revert, you can do so for free, though you can only do this once during the preview program.

Changes to an online ID can be made through the Settings menu or via the Profile page of a PS4. Shuman notes that the "you will be able to change your online ID as many times as you want", provided that you perform those changes "during the preview program" window (which is scheduled to conclude by the end of this November), before it reaches everyone else. Sony will provide a list of supported ID change games (again, this is freakish that it doesn't just work universally, and a glimpse into Sony's odd infrastructure).
