‘Venom’ breaks records, ‘A Star Is Born’ shines at the box office

Despite a plethora of negative critic reviews, the Tom Hardy led Venom movie shattered records at the box office during its debut weekend!

"Venom" also dominated at the worldwide box office with $125.2 million, setting an global record for an October opening. And that's without China, where a premiere date is still set to be announced.

Despite receiving a bad critical score (31% rotten), Venom now holds an 88% "fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes, while "A Star Is Born" has received a 92% fresh critic score on the website. Considering it was directly competing with A Star Is Born, which also took more than $40m, that's pretty damn impressive. And today we have word on just how much cash the flick made at the box office.

Taking the No. 2 spot this week is the latest iteration of the "A Star Is Born" story bringing in an estimated $41 million and producing buckets of tears along the way.

"A Star Is Born" holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and rode that buzz to a very strong opening weekend for an awards film. Always a good sign.

Together, the two films contributed to the best October weekend in North American history, according to Variety.

Animated movie Smallfoot finished third with US$14.4 million, followed by comedy Night School, with US$12.3 million.

A bankable Oscar-bait movie and a hit superhero flick?
