Modric v Ronaldo rematch as Ballon d'Or nominees unveiled

Modric v Ronaldo rematch as Ballon d'Or nominees unveiled

The City striker is among the first five names to be revealed by France Football, along with Edinson Cavani, Alisson Becker, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

Modric, a World Cup runner-up with Croatia, beat Juventus' Ronaldo and Salah to win the Federation Internationale de Football Association prize last month after Messi was surprisingly left off the final three-man list.

He is joined by the holder and five-time victor Ronaldo, who is included after facing an allegation of rape by a woman he met in Las Vegas in 2009, which the Juventus striker denies.

Messi was on target for Barca against Valencia this past weekend, while Ronaldo also scored for the Bianconeri in their win over Udinese.

The Ballon d'Or, a prestigious award presented since 1956, is given to the best player of the year.

The victor of the prestigious Ballon d'Or organised by France Football magazine will be announced on December 3.

He was followed by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who made a then-world record transfer to the club after helping Roma to the Champions League semifinals.

Antoine Griezmann is one of the great favorites to take the prize due to his triumphs in the Europe League, the UEFA Super Cup title and, above all, the World Cup in Russian Federation, where he was one of the most outstanding players.

Courtois is included after a season in which he won the FA Cup with Chelsea and came third at the World Cup with Belgium - winning the Golden Glove - before he moved to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid midfielder Isco, Liverpool's Brazilian Roberto Firmino and Uruguay's rugged defender Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid also got the nod.

Also making the cut are Juve's Mario Mandzukic and Liverpool's Sadio Mane, while Barcelona are also represented by Croat defender Ivan Rakitic.

The victor will be announced in Paris on 3 December with a women's victor awarded for the first time.
