The National Weather Service has issued strong warnings to residents of the Carolinas and other mid-Atlantic states, saying the hurricane would be the "storm of a lifetime", bringing damaging winds, life-threatening storm surges, and "catastrophic flooding". The storm is strengthening rapidly and is expected to become a major hurricane very soon.

The satellite's MODIS instrument also detected "thick rings of powerful storms" swirling around the eye of the hurricane. It's estimated that 1 million people will be impacted by Florence's arrival.

Hurricane Florence is blowing sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour as it barrels toward the US East Coast as a Category 4 storm.

The US National Hurricane Centre has warned that Hurricane Florence will bring "life-threatening, catastrophic flash flooding" to North and SC.

The eye of category 4 Hurricane Florence is "chilling, even from space", according to German astronaut Alexander Gerst, who posted this image to Twitter on September 12, 2018.

"Further strengthening is anticipated, and Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday", NHC officials warned in another advisory.

Florence's predicted path as of Wednesday has it making landfall on the SC coast, just south of North Carolina.

"Ever stared down the gaping eye of a Category 4 hurricane?"

The storm was expected to make landfall in North Carolina some time Thursday or Friday, though winds frome the hurricane could be felt as early as Wednesday evening, according to NHC.
