NFL players continue to kneel during national anthem

Two of the campaigners were Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson who knelt during Miami's season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

Just hours before Sunday's game, Trump tweeted about the dip in National Football League ratings for Thursday's season-opening game compared to past seasons, hinting that players standing for the anthem could restore lost viewership.

Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson were the only players reported to kneel before the eight early games kicked off.

"No one wants this added stress or added negativity or hatred coming toward them", he told the Times.

The anthem protests have remained in the public focus, due in large part to the recently announced Nike campaign featuring original anthem protester Colin Kaepernick, and President Trump's frequent criticism of the protesters.

Linemen Duane Brown and Quinton Jefferson walked off the field and waited in the tunnel while a field-sized American flag was unfurled and the national anthem played before their season opener Sunday in Denver.

Schefter's report cited league sources to have claimed meetings and conversations on the controversy can come to no consensus on whether or not to penalize or fine players or teams for failed to stand on the field during the national anthem.

"They have not backed down, even when attacked and intimidated", Kaepernick said in the tweet, which was accompanied by a picture of the Dolphins kneeling before their game.

The NFL briefly had a policy in place in May regarding the anthem, but quickly rescinded it so the league and players union could negotiate. "Otherwise worse!" Trump said.

TMZ reported how US President, Donald Trump, took a shot at the NFL and player protests before Sunday's games, saying, "Wow, NFL first game ratings are way down over an already really bad past year comparison".

"I think it's awesome they're stepping up and spreading awareness", Wilson said.
