Tropical Storm Florence: SC Governor Declares State of Emergency

Tropical storm Florence will strengthen to a hurricane on Sunday, forecasters predict, before it makes landfall on the U.S. east coast later this week.

Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season this past Wednesday, reaching Category 4 status with maximum sustained winds peaking at 130 miles per hour.

Here's the bottom line.the Southeast coast, including anywhere along the Carolina coast, could be looking at a very significant hurricane approaching the coast by as early as Wednesday night or Thursday. A state of emergency was declared in sc and Virginia to give officials and residents enough time to prepare for Florence if it hits the area.

"I am declaring a state of emergency so that we can begin to prepare state assets, and I encourage Virginians to monitor forecasts and make their own preparations now", Northam said.

"With this order government agencies will begin to mobilize in anticipation of a hurricane", McMaster said.

The storm was expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents along the US east coast this weekend.

By Saturday morning Florence was located 835 miles southeast of Bermuda, and had winds of 65 mph.

South Carolina's Emergency Management Division also advised people living on the coast to start making contingency plans. At right, off the coast of Africa is Tropical Storm Helene, and second from right is Tropical Depression 9.

Almost all of the North Carolina and SC coasts are included in the cone of uncertainty for the storm and the latest model Saturday night showed the storm making landfall in Wilmington.

Forecasters say it's too soon to tell where the storm will go because there's still a lot of uncertainty in its long-term track.

"We are entering the peak of hurricane season and we know well the unpredictability and power of these storms", Cooper said.

Another "life-threatening impact" from Florence could be freshwater flooding from prolonged heavy rainfall inland, the center said.

The probably path of Hurricane Florence as of September 9, 2018, estimating the landfall of the storm in the Carolinas at Thursday evening or Friday morning. The window for the storm to miss the U.S. coast and turn harmlessly back to sea is closing, CNN forecasters said.

The storm is heading west at 8 miles per hour and packing maximum-sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. Gradual strengthening is forecast and Florence could become a hurricane again over the weekend.
