Ryder Cup: Tiger, Phil and the Mad Scientist

Just a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team is still to be decided after captain Jim Furyk made three of his captain's picks official.

Though the 48-year-old has a middling 18-20-7 Ryder Cup record, he would still have a good chance in Paris of becoming the most successful American player of all-time in the event.

Beyond the course, the presence of Woods will have a psychological impact in the opinion of Spieth.

Mickelson, meanwhile, has played a record 11 consecutive Ryder Cups, and has qualified automatically every time.

To have an opportunity to go to Europe and to have an opportunity to win a Ryder Cup and to be part of this group of guys to have that opportunity to go there, it's exciting, it really is, Woods told the media on Tuesday.

"It was a great learning experience to see the passion that one of our late, great, team leaders, Payne Stewart, showed for the event", Woods noted.

It is inconceivable that 14-times major champion Woods, arguably the greatest player ever, could be left out after the form he has displayed in his comeback this year from a potentially career-ending back injury.

"We're all excited to see him healthy again, to see his game playing so well".

"The only thing that I will try to do with some guys that haven't been on the team is just let them know what to expect so that the pressure doesn't mount".

Woods has been relieved of his original role as a vice-captain - the same role he held at Hazeltine in 2016 - but will now be replaced in that role, with David Duval, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar added to Furyk's backroom team.

Woods has a pedestrian Ryder Cup record of 13 wins, 17 losses and three halves, though he has been stellar in singles, losing only once, on his debut in 1997. It's a feather in our cap to have him playing on our side. "As the year progressed, I've kind of gained some traction, and was somehow able to get some high finishes and lo and behold, I'm a part of this team".

"It's incredible, it really is to look back at the start of the year and to have accomplished a goal like that to be part of this team, and now to be a I said, it's beyond special".

Furyk now has one further pick to make before his line-up is completed ahead of travelling to France to attempt to defend America's title.
