State health departments are warning residents to take precautions against mosquitoes, which spread the virus.

Maragos said West Nile positive mosquito tests statewide increased from 1,498 to 1,984; human cases increased statewide from two to five; and the number of Ohio's 88 counties with West Nile reported in them increased from 44 to 52.

West Nile Virus is transmitted to horses via bites from infected mosquitoes. So far, no human cases have been reported, no positive mosquito pools have been identified, and Canadian Blood Services has seen no positives through its screening program.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus.

The chances of a person contracting WNV are low and most people infected with West Nile virus will not have any symptoms. About one in 150 infected people will become severely ill, and may experience symptoms such as a stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, convulsions, or paralysis. Other tips include getting rid of stagnant water, checking window and door screens, putting new water in bird baths, and trimming any tall grass or weeds. This is important, particularly for people who work outdoors or where mosquitoes are found.

Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other EPA approved product to exposed skin or clothing, and always following the manufacturer's directions for use. Wearing long-sleeves, long trousers and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes need water to lay eggs. Owners should also speak with their veterinarian about mosquito repellents approved for use in animals and vaccinations to prevent WNV and EEE.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already issued a warning over virus' risk of spreading across the continent.
