Pilot dies after plane crashes into home with couple inside

A Utah man was killed when he crashed a stolen small plane into his own home hours after he was arrested and released from custody for a domestic dispute with his wife.

In this photo provided by the Utah County Sheriff Office shows Duane Youd. The crash occurred at a home at 2:38 a.m. Monday. Authorities say the small plane has crashed into a house in Utah, killing the pilot.

The couple had been drinking and went to American Fork Canyon to talk about problems they were having, authorities said.

Hours later, at 12:30 a.m., Youd called and asked a patrol officer be present at his house to "keep the peace" as he picked up belongings and his truck, officials said. He flew for VanCon, a construction company that owned the plane. From there, he set off for nearby Spanish Fork-Springville Airport, commandeered a plane and took off for home. That occurred without incident, Sandoval said.

Photos from the scene showed the plane wreckage in the front yard of the home.

It's unknown if the child in the house is related to Youd, Sandoval said.

He flew directly to his neighborhood and smashed into his house, Sandoval said.

The home itself caught fire and became fully engulfed before crews arrived and extinguished the flames.

The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the incident and was expected to issue a report within the week.

Police had responded one previous time to the house on a domestic violence incident, Sgt Sandoval said. An airport employee who described himself as a "broken guy with a few screws loose,"stole a turboprop airplane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday night, casually chatted to ground control staff as he performed aerobatic stunts, and eventually slammed the aircraft into woodland near Seattle".
